So, I'm at a local grocery store and run across a package of ground rhus. Not familiar with the botanical name? That's sumac. (The seeds, not the leaves)

What exactly does one cook with rhus?

Itching Powder? Poison? :-P Being from Wisconsin, I knew quite a few people who were allergic to that stuff growing up.

I'm going to assume this isn't Poison Sumac, or surely they wouldn't be selling it in the grocery dept....

We have non-poison Sumac down here. ;o)

If it's the flowers/berries, apparently some sort of drink:

FoodNetwork.com, search for "sumac" - 13 (lucky, that) recipes come up.

Israeli Couscous with Diced Sweet potato and Sumac
Sumac-Garlic Mayonaise
Brinza
Grilled Chicken Breast with Foraged Vegetables (you could do this up and call it "chicken ala Borgia" for your next pot luck)

I think I'd go for the mayo. (Although I like the idea of a vegetable foraged in a grocery store.)

As long as you're not foraging for things growing in the cracks in the floor. Though I can see that as an interesting venue for a scene in a future....

I have a recipe that calls for sumac. It's in the filling for mideastern spinach pies. We had a mideastern restaurant here that had spinach pies to die for. But the place went out of business and so I looked up recipes for the pies but I've never made any yet.

It does seem to be a middle-eastern spice. (Doesn't explain why we're carrying it in Oklahoma, but you never know....)
